Equipment and Technical FAQ

Some people are interested in the type of equipment used, and some of the more technical aspects of wedding photography so I’ve tried to answer their questions here, if this isn’t you don’t worry and you really don’t need to read anything here as there is a distinct danger it’ll get very geeky!.

Q:- What cameras do you use and why?
A:-  I currently use Canon 1 series Digital SLR’s and Canon L series lenses - these give me the quality that I need and let me work quickly and efficiently which means I spend less time setting up shots and you get back to your guests quicker.

Q:- What other equipment do you need/use?
A:- I have a flashguns, tripods, reflectors etc. basically everything I need for the vast majority of weddings, but if I don’t have what I need I will hire it for the day - at my expense not yours. I don’t have big studio lights that need to be carried around the place as I find these take a lot of time to set up and use properly and as I’ve said before I try to concentrate on getting you back to your guests and the fun part of the day.

Q:- Do you shoot RAW or JPEG?
A:- I always shoot RAW - Whilst it may take more time to do the post processing I feel that the extra effort is worth it. I’m also a bit of a perfectionist and I’ll take every single possible advantage that’ll let me get the job done to my satisfaction.

Q:- What format are the files on the CD/DVD that we get after the wedding.
A:- They will usually be full size top quality Jpegs which are about 5MB in size each - if you want I can give you full size 16 bit Tiffs which will be close to 50MB each. The vast majority of people will not be able to tell the difference between them and your computer will thank you for the reduced file size.

Q:- Do you use an Ink jet printer, and if you do aren’t you afraid that the photo’s will fade?
A:- Usually I use a Professional Lab in Edinburgh but for some sizes of print I will use an ink jet printer, however I’m not concerned about prints made this way fading, I use an Epson R1800, the inks and papers that I use have been tested by the Willhelm Institute and are fade free for up to 100 years if treated properly. Please note if you leave a photo out in natural light it too will fade.-
